Spicy Moravian Cookies
Moravian Cookies are a thin, crisp, and spicy specialty brought from Europe in the 18th century. It is a delicious cookie that is still popular today.
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 tsp baking soda
1 3/4 tsp baking powder
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Heat molasses to boiling in a large saucepan. Remove from heat
Pour molasses into a large mixing bowl and stir in butter. Add baking soda, baking powder, flour, salt, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Blend well.
Chill in refrigerator for 8 hours overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Roll out dough 1/16th-inch thick on a lightly floured board or pastry cloth. Cut dough with a cookie cutter in desired shapes.
Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 5 – 7 minutes.
Yield: 6 dozen
