STURGEON BAY, WI (January 18, 2016) – Winter is a serene and tranquil time in Sturgeon Bay, Door County. Parks nature and preserves are cloaked in a blanket of fresh fallen snow ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Miles of scenic, ice-covered shoreline sparkle in the sunlight giving way to spectacular photography.

Some come to enjoy the excitement of snowmobiling, while others flock for a relaxing and romantic winter escape with a significant other. Whatever the reason, for so many people, a winter getaway to Sturgeon Bay, Door County is more than a vacation — it’s a tradition.

Now in its 11th year, Fire and Ice remains one of Sturgeon Bay’s most treasured winter traditions. Hosted by the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center and Stone Harbor Resort, Fire and Ice offers an array of outdoor festivities, delectable dining, exceptional live entertainment and more.

All the fun will begin at 9am on Saturday, February 13 when nationally renowned, professional ice and snow carvers are joined by ambitious ice carvers ranging in capability from beginner to advanced for the annual carving competition. As the day wears on, simple blocks of ice and snow are transformed into unique art sculptures up to 8 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide. All sculptures will be located within the downtown Sturgeon Bay shopping district.

Walking maps detailing ice and snow block locations will be available at the SBVC along with many other area businesses. Complimentary Door County trolley rides will also be available from 10:30am to 2:30pm to provide attendees with convenient transportation to and from carving locations as well as shopping and dining establishments.

Beginning at 2pm, a panel of volunteers will judge all of the ice sculptures completed by beginner, intermediate and advanced carvers. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded based on competitor level during an awards ceremony at the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center at 2:30pm. The public is strongly encouraged to participate in the judging process by completing a People’s Choice Award ballot included with the walking maps.

Anyone interested in joining the carving competition may do so at no cost. Experience is not necessary, and teams of friends and family are welcome to join. Carving tools are available for a $10 refundable deposit from the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center. All participants will receive a SBVC goody bag — but that’s not all. As a special sweet treat this year, Door County Candy will be providing the carver(s) of each ice block (1 per block) with a $50 Door County Candy Gift Card just for participating! Saturday evening the fun will continue with the annual Fire and Ice dinner, dance and silent auction at Stone Harbor Resort. Following dinner, the Pink Houses, an 11-piece party band, will perform popular classic rock ranging from the 70s to today. Reservations are required.
