Once I realized, I instantaneously began dreaming of a bigger space,” said founder Jennie Bexell. The store, located at 10647 North Bay Shore Drive, originally operated at 550 square feet and is now 1,350 square feet, and Bexell, who used to be a tenant in the building, is now the owner.
Staying true to the building’s original architecture, the wall was reopened between Spot and the retail space to the south. Soon after, painting began, four new fitting rooms were added and all new lighting and windows were installed. The flooring is beautifully refinished and upcycled features adorn – colander light fixtures, chairs as wall displays and a bunk bed clothes rack.
Beginning at a young age growing up in Österbymo, Sweden, Bexell loved color. Painting the expanded space was a colorful undertaking. When you enter her shop you are greeted by the rainbow, both in the décor and in the retail. Bexell believes clothes should be fun, comfortable and unique – but it’s not just about selling clothes, it’s also about the experience.
Spot’s focus is on women’s clothing and accessories – this season it will carry about 75 different lines with a lot of shoes, purses and jewelry – but Bexell says she doesn’t pass up something she loves when she sees it at a buying show. You’ll find the store sprinkled with funny greeting cards, coffee table books, enchanting candles, witty dish towels and random must-haves.
Spot features an eclectic assortment of seasonal styles – dresses, tunics, leggings, sweaters and basics, “My goal is every person who walks through my doors finds something,” says Bexell. The styles are approachable and the price point affordable.
The idea for Spot was born more from the question, “‘What does Sister Bay need?’ than ‘What do I want to do?’” But what begin as a community-minded brainstorm has turned into a full-blown passion for people and retail, “It’s an exciting time to be a business owner in Sister Bay and I hope I’m helping to fill a niche in the village,” said Bexell.
Looking back on her first years in business, Bexell says the Door County community has been so welcoming, friendly and helpful. She humbly explains she could not have done it without the help of strangers, friends and family – her handyman brother, in particular. “I would never have imagined how many amazing people I’ve met through Spot, many have started as customers and become friends,” she says, overwhelmed with gratitude.
Bexell began traveling to America to work summers in Door County 20 years ago and became a full-time resident eight years ago. She lives in Sister Bay with her husband and their rescue mutt Ronja – named after a Swedish fairytale character. To Ronja’s delight, Spot also carries dog toys and bowls.
