Door County is a reading county. It’s a vacation spot, of course, and what better way to unwind than to immerse one’s self in a book? Beyond that, Door County is known for all kinds of learning: lectures and classes and discussions and drop-in book clubs.  So we read here, and that’s due in part to our wonderful libraries.

Our small county that’s less than 70 miles in length boasts eight libraries. The main library is in Sturgeon Bay, and seven smaller branches are spread out over the county, making books always accessible and close by.

Here’s some important info about our local libraries:

  • It’s easy to get a temporary library card. (You can be a tourist and still have check-out privileges. Just bring in an ID and fill out a quick form.)
  • Every library has free WIFI. It’s not unusual to see people sitting in the library parking lots late into the night to check their emails, and the librarians are fine with that.
  • You can check out more than books. (And there’s no limit on the number of those.) Puzzles, games, children’s toys, and videos are available at each of the branches.
  • The librarians are friendly and full of information.
  • Once you have a library card, it’s easy to order a book ahead and have it waiting once you arrive. The Door County libraries have an extensive interlibrary loan system, and can get you just about any book you want.
  • Each branch is unique, quaint, and beautiful in its own way. Visit any or all of them throughout your stay. They’ll make you remember why you like reading.

Each of the branches are open slightly different days. Check with each local branch for the schedule.
