DDBBQ 1

WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI (June 30, 2016) – A full field of 42 professional teams have entered the 5th Annual Deaths Door BBQ on Washington Island. Four of those teams finished in the top ten in the Team Of the Year standings last year. The event will be held at the Washington Island Airport on Saturday, August 27, 2016.The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and will distribute $7500 in prize money and awards.

Deaths Door BBQ is considered one the premiere BBQ contests in the Midwest. Teams from six states will be represented: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The field is star-studded with many teams that have claimed Grand Championship's from around the country.

Headlining the field is Iowa’s Smokey D’s from Des Moines Iowa, currently the number one team in the country (that's out of over 4,500 teams!). Beside's leading the Team Of the Year (TOY) standings this year, Smokey D's finished number one in brisket last season and finished third in the overall final standings.

Also entered are two teams from Missouri, Gettin’ Basted and Shake ’N Bake BBQ. Gettin’ Basted was last years number one team in chicken and finished seventh in the TOY standings. Shake ’N Bake BBQ topped every team last year in the rib category and ended up sixth in the TOY. Both teams are currently ranked in the top ten this year.

Another top ten team entered is Tim’s Full Belli Deli out of Oshkosh, WI. Tim and his team ended up ninth last year in TOY and finished tenth in the country in the pork category. They have entered DDBBQ every year but are still looking for their first Grand Championship in the event. They finished second last year earning them the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Returning this year to defend his title is T-Mac Smokin’ formerly of Appleton (now competing out of Sturgeon Bay). Tom and his wife, Becky, won the inaugural DDBBQ contest and took home the Grand Championship again last year. They have competed in the Jack Daniels Invitational in Lynchburg, TN and finished second out over 100 teams in the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City. They received that invitation by winning the Deaths Door BBQ contest.

Other teams hoping to capture the title of Grand Champion are two Minnesota teams Rebel Fire Que’N Company and Big City BBQ, Above The Bridge
BBQ from Michigan, and, from Illinois, Cancer Sucks Chicago.com, Big “E” BBQ, Hot Ash BBQ Company and Valet Porking. Top Wisconsin teams entered are Freeman Brothers BBQ of Verona, Crash Test Smokers of Wrightstown, Fat Andy’s BBQ from Menomonee Falls, Founding Fathers of Kaukauna, and Chefs Gone Grillin’, Fox River BBQ, and Smoke Infusion, all from Appleton.

The winner of this years event will receive an invitation to compete in the American Royal Invitational and be put in a lottery for a spot in the Jack Daniels Invitational. The event starts at 10am and runs until after the awards ceremony around 5pm. Admission and parking are free. Besides great BBQ, there will also be live entertainment featuring the Alex Wilson Band, Island and non-Island vendors, children games, contest sponsors and plenty of great food and beverages. There will also be a raffle for a Traeger pellet grill donated by Lamperts of Washington Island and a half hog (butchered, frozen, and packed in a cooler) courtesy of Robert and Patricia Cornell.

The Washington Island Ferry Line will once again this year run the BBQ Train. Visitors can park their vehicle at Northport, buy a passenger ticket and travel to the Island. The BBQ Train will be waiting to take them to the BBQ site. The train will return guests to the dock when they're ready to leave. Riding the train is free.
