WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI (August 23, 2016) — Some of the best barbecue teams in the country will be heading to Washington Island for the 5th Annual Death's Door BBQ on Saturday, August 27. The Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS)-sanctioned event will be held at the Washington Island Airport.
Three former world barbecue champions, including Iowa’s Smokey D’s BBQ from Des Moines, Iowa, Cancersuckschicago from Chicago, IL and QUAU from Broomfield, IL will be competing.
Other top teams challenging for the title of Grand Champion are; Big “E” BBQ and Hot Ash BBQ out of Illinois, Big City BBQ and Rebel Fire Que’N Company from Minnesota, Shake’N Bake and Gettin’ Basted out of Missouri and and Above The Bridge from Michigan. Top Wisconsin teams include: Tim’s Full Belli Deli, Fox River BBQ, Freeman Brothers BBQ, T-Mac Smokin’, Chef’s Gone Grillin’ and Smoke Infusion.
Many of these teams compete in events all around the country hoping to claim KCBS’s Team Of The Year Award. The crown goes to the team that earns the most points from events held across the country. This is the goal of every team to be known as the best team in the country.
The high level of experience among the competing teams is making Death's Door BBQ renowned across the U.S. Here are bios for some of the 5th Annual DDBBQ teams:
Iowa’s Smokey D’s BBQ - Des Moines, IA
Darren and Sherry Warth compete on the National BBQ Circuit under the name of Iowa’s Smokey D’s and have won a combined 700+ Category awards and over 55 State BBQ Championships, including winning the American Royal World Series of BBQ and the Jack Daniels World Championship in 2013, the King of the Smoker Invitational in LaQuinta, CA and the USA Barbecue Championship in 2014. They have been ranked in the top ten in the nation annually for the last ten years out off over 7,000 teams.
Shake N’ Bake BBQ – Washington, MO
Tim and Teri Scheer compete in the KCBS Circuit under the Shake N’ Bake BBQ. They are also the owners of Gateway Drum Smokers and Blues Hog BBQ Products. The Scheers have several category wins at the American Royal, and have competed at the King of the Smoker several times. They finished the 2015 season with a 6th place finish in the overall standings and a first place finish in pork ribs in the KCBS Team Of The Year. They are currently ranked first in the country in pork barbecue.
QUAU – Brimfield, IL
Mike and Beth Wozniak compete on the KCBS circuit as QUAU. The Wozniaks are the KCBS 2010 Team of The Year, and Grand Champion at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship in 2010. QUAU has over 75 Grand Championships. In 2006, they became the first team in KCBS's 20 year history to record a perfect 75 point season (five triple point Grand Championships).
Tim’s Full Belli Deli – Oshkosh, WI
Tim Schopp, Adam Heagle and Diana Wiechman compete on the KCBS circuit as Tim’s Full Belli Deli. Now in their fifth season, the team finished ninth in the KCBS TOY in overall and 9th in Pork. The team represented Wisconsin at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship with a top 10 call in Pork Ribs, and received an American Royal invitation. Tim's Full Belli Deli was invited to King Of The Smoker in LaQuinta, CA, a competition consisting of the 24 best teams in the country. They are the reigning Wisconsin BBQ champions, as well as the reigning Great Lakes BBQ Association champion.
T-Mac Smokin’ BBQ - Sturgeon Bay, WI
Becky and Tom McIntosh compete on the KCBS circuit as T-Mac Smokin’ BBQ. The Macintoshes were the Grand Champion at the first Death's Door BBQ and at the 2015 event. In 2013 the team attended the American Royal Invitational and finished as the Reserve Grand Champion. In 2015, the Macintoshes traveled to San Juan, PR and were awarded a Grand Championship.
Freeman Brothers – Madison, WI
Aubrey and Peter Freeman compete on the KCBS circuit as Freeman Brothers BBQ. They were the 2010 Wisconsin draw to the Jack Daniel’s World BBQ Championship, and the 2015 Grand Champion at the World Food Expo in Pork Ribs, recording a “scorecard perfect“ 180.
Besides being able to watch and talk to some of the best teams in the country, attendees will be able to enjoy great entertainment. Washington Island musician Julian Hagen will perform at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by the Alex Wilson Band. There will also be Island and non-Island vendors, children’s games, arts and crafts and plenty of great barbecue and refreshments.
Admission and parking are free. For convenience, visitors can park their car at Northport Pier, buy a passenger ticket and travel to the Island. At the Island dock, board the BBQ Train which goes directly to the DDBBQ site. When ready to leave the event, climb back on the BBQ Train and return to the dock.
