WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI (September 1, 2016) — Tim and Teri Scheer of Shake 'N Bake BBQ, a barbeque team from Washington, Missouri, were awarded the Grand Champion prize at the 5th Annual Death's Door BBQ (DDBBQ) this past Saturday, August 27 on Washington Island. This year, Death's Door BBQ featured 42 teams from six states. The winning teams split $7,500 in prize money and all profits from Death's Door BBQ help fund the Washington Island Food Pantry
Death's Door BBQ is Door County's only Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS)-sanctioned barbeque event. KCBS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of barbeque and is the world's largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 20,000 members worldwide. KCBS sanctions over 500 barbeque contests world-wide.
This year's event was the first time Tim and Teri Scheer participated in the DDBBQ contest; they dominated the 2016 competition by winning two of the four Kansas City Barbecue Society's four meat categories. The Scheers' Shake 'N Bake BBQ team took first place in Chicken and Ribs categories and placed seventh in both the Pork and Beef Brisket categories. The Scheers were the #1 team in the United States for Pork Ribs for 2015.
Darren and Sherry Warth of Smokey D's BBQ, a team from Des Moines, Iowa, were awarded the runner-up prize as Reserve Grand Champion. The Warths placed third in Chicken, 21st in Ribs, fifth in Pork, and second in Beef Brisket. In 2015, the Warths' Smokey D's BBQ team was the #3 team in the United States in overall standings.
Last year's DDBBQ Grand Champion, T-Mac Smokin’ of Sturgeon Bay, WI, was awarded the third place prize in overall standings at the 2016 event. The T-Mac Smokin' team of Tom and Becky McIntosh placed in the top ten in three of the four meat categories, third in Brisket, fifth in Ribs, eighth in Pork and sixteenth in Chicken.
The top prize for the Pork category was awarded to It’s Five O'Clock Somewhere, a team from Cessna Park, IL. The top prize for the Beef Brisket category was awarded to Freeman Brothers BBQ from Verona, WI. Four competing teams from Wisconsin finished in the top ten overall standings: T-Mac Smokin’ from Sturgeon Bay was in third place, Wicked Smoke from Fort Atkinson was in fourth place, Plastered Pork from Greenville was in sixth place, and Tim’s Full Belli Deli from Oshkosh was in seventh place.
Despite intermittent rain showers throughout the day, a large crowd arrived on Washington Island means of the ferry, watercraft and even airplanes to watch the 42 teams as they competed and also enjoy an afternoon of live music and incredibly good barbeque, said DDBBQ Chairman Dick Jepsen.
