The Ridges Offers Scientific Illustrator Program
Student - The Ridges

BAILEYS HARBOR, WI (September 29, 2016) — Throughout the month of September, The Ridges in Baileys Harbor presented a three-part scientific illustration series. Over the course of three weekends, participants explored The Ridges Sanctuary looking for flora, insects and amphibians in their natural habitats. Participants would then study the items, sometimes even utilizing a microscope, to learn the different components of each.

Once each component was studied, the students would head to the sketchbook. With some of the Mid-west’s most well-known scientific illustrators to help guide and teach, students would draw and create their own portfolio of what they discovered.

“The Ridges has always been a perfect location to study all that nature has to offer. As one of the most bio-diverse areas in the entire state, we couldn’t think of a more perfect setting a scientific illustration class” said Steve Leonard, Executive Director. “Participants would discover everything from dragonflies to orchids and salamanders to varieties of lichen, what an opportunity for the participants.” continued Leonard.

The Ridges plans to continue this type of programming throughout 2017. With a mission focus of Education, Research and Outreach, this type of program is a perfect fit. “This is why I love The Ridges”, said Natalie, participant and avid illustrator. “It was the perfect classroom, indoors and out – what a great program to have right here in Baileys Harbor.” The Ridges provides a variety of programing year-round for youth, adults and families. Miles of rustic hiking trails and the new Hidden Brook Boardwalk are open year-round, sun-up to sun-down.
