SUMMARY:The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society (DPAS) Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:DPAS is pleased to welcome Dr. Brian Welsh\, Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay\, as the guest speaker for the December meeting. Dr. Welsh will present:\n“Fun Studying the Sun — A Brief Tour of Our Star” \nIn this engaging talk\, Dr. Welsh will explore why our Sun is far from the “boring yellow ball” it may appear to be. Although it seems calm from Earth\, the Sun is actually an active and dynamic star. Its constantly changing magnetic field drives powerful events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs)—giant eruptions that send massive amounts of energized particles into space\, sometimes toward Earth. These events create dazzling auroras\, but they can also disrupt satellites\, communications\, and other technologies.\n\nDr. Welsh will guide attendees through the forces behind these phenomena and what they teach us about the inner workings of our closest star.
