7th annual Community Honey Harvest

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (August 3, 2026) – Those curious about the world of honeybees and beekeeping are invited to the 7th annual Community Honey Harvest on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, from 9 am to 1 pm, at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay.

The Door County Beekeepers Club, with support from Crossroads at Big Creek, the Door County  Master Gardeners Association, Wild Ones, and the Seed Library, will present interactive activities and demonstrations for all ages.

Attendees can pick up free pollinator seeds and an activity map at the welcome table. Educational stations will be set up at the Collins Learning Center. An observation hive with a glass window will let visitors see honeybees tending their brood. There will be a variety of children’s activities: pet a live drone (male) honeybee, explore beekeeping tools and hive boxes, and watch a movie.

We also plan demonstrations featuring honeybee products, including learning to make cutting board conditioner and to condition cutting boards and wood tools, such as spoons and ladles, as well as a demonstration of honey bagel preparation.

Beekeepers will demonstrate honey extraction—removing honey from the comb—either by conventionally spinning Langstroth frames in an extractor at 10:30 and 11:45 am or by collecting honey directly from Flow‑Hive frames installed in modified Langstroth boxes at 10 am and 11:15 am. Protective bee suits and veils will be provided as needed, and participants will receive a small honey bear sample while supplies last.

The Wayne Stenzel Memorial Scholarship offers a unique opportunity to provide a Door County resident with a complete beekeeping experience, including training and mentoring, equipment, and even a colony of bees. The Door County Beekeepers Club has an apiary at Crossroads, where curious visitors can observe the bees as they go about their daily work, bringing pollen and nectar to the hive throughout the summer.
