Did you know that Halloween has roots stretching back more than 2,000 years?
The holiday traces its origins in part to Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”), an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. People believed this was a time when the boundary between the living and the spirit world grew thin.
Over the centuries, these traditions blended with Christian observances, including All Hallows’ Eve, eventually becoming the Halloween we know today.
By the late 1800s, Halloween celebrations in America often featured parties, games, costumes, and a little harmless mischief. One popular tradition was bobbing for apples, a game that entertained generations long before trick-or-treating became widespread!
Here in Door County, where apple orchards have long been part of our heritage, that seems like a particularly fitting Halloween tradition!
