Fish Creek, Wis. (September 3, 2024) – On Friday, September 13, Alash Tuvan Ensemble will return to Door Community Auditorium (DCA) by popular demand.
The members of Alash are masters of traditional Tuvan instruments and throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture, they are also fans of Western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with Western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet always true to their Tuvan musical heritage.
The Washington Post called Alash’s live show “utterly stunning,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” And Newsweek wrote: “Imagine a human bagpipe—a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally—by the same person, at the same time.”
Alash’s concert is made possible with support from presenting sponsor Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik; major sponsors The Dörr Hotel, Main Street Market, Peninsula Pulse, Matt and Karla Sagorac, Wild Tomato, and Wisconsin Public Radio; and partners Willow & Chris Alexander, Carrington, Grasse’s Grill, The Red Putter, Sister Bay Suds, and Wood Rabbit Acupuncture.
The show begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 13. Tickets range from $20-45. Two daytime student matinee performances are also scheduled. Interested parties should contact the DCA box office for more information about the matinees.
Advance tickets are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
