An Overlooked Tradition: Looking back at the History of the Door County Fair

August 4, 2023 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (August 4, 2023) – The Door County Historical Society will host its August Dinner Program, on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 6:00 PM. The event will take place at Birmingham’s, located on Bay Shore Drive in Sturgeon Bay.  The August Dinner Program promises an engaging and informative evening, as attendees delve into the rich and captivating history of the Door County Fair.  The fair has been an integral part of the community for over 150 years, and this program offers a unique opportunity to explore its roots, evolution, and cherished memories.

County fairs are a social and cultural fixture that bring communities together, and the Door County Fair is no exception. Beginning in 1869, the Door County Fair has persevered through world wars, economic depressions and the Covid-19 pandemic, yet its history often overlooked. Door County Historical Museum Curator Matt Adelman will examine the Door County Fair through the lens of history and discuss both its highs and its lows, as well its significance to the story of Door County.

“We are thrilled to present this special program on the Door County Fair,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “It is an essential part of our county’s heritage, and we hope this event will bring back fond memories for many, while also enlightening our attendees about the fair’s fascinating journey through the years.”

Guests will be treated to dinner at Birmingham’s, a third generation, family owned establishment known for homemade food, specialty drinks, and friendly waitstaff. The evening promises to be a delightful blend of history, delicious food, and friendly camaraderie.

The August Dinner Program is open to the public and tickets can be purchased through the Door County Historical Society’s website (www.doorcountyhistory.org). The price to attend is $30 per person (Door County Historical Society members pay $25 each.) Space is limited, so interested individuals are encouraged to secure their seats early.
