Sister Bay, Wis. (August 19, 2020) – The Liberty Grove Town Board and the Sister Bay Village Board have authorized a cooperative venture to increase recycling and protect the environment.
All residents, business owners or operators, and owners of property in the Village of Sister Bay and the Town of Liberty Grove are encouraged to participate in a Shredding/Appliance Recycling/Drug Drop-Off Day on Saturday, September 12, 2020.
There will be no charge to have documents securely shredded or to recycle most computer components and small household appliances, but a fee of $5.00 could be charged to recycle printers, copiers and fax machines, a fee of $15.00 could be charged to recycle units with Freon such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, and between $40 and $50 could be charged to recycle monitors that are over 15” in size as well as console or big screen TV’s. Please note that this list is not all-inclusive. All shredded materials and appliances will be recycled.
- Any documents to be shredded, as well as any appliances or computer components to be recycled, or drugs to be safely disposed of, should be brought to the parking lot at the Liberty Grove Town Hall - 11161 Old Stage Road between 9:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. on September 12, 2020. Before large items will be placed on the truck any and all recycling fees must be paid. Please note that there will be a limit of five Bankers Boxes full of materials to be shredded per household or business.
- Due to overwhelming response in the past, persons from other municipalities will not be allowed to participate in the shredding and appliance recycling programs.
The Prescription Drug Drop-Off will be an excellent way for all Northern Door residents to clean out their medicine cabinets, which is especially important if you have old prescriptions for opioids, benzodiazepines, or highly addictive medications in your home. Studies have shown that most addicts obtain their medications from a friend or family members, especially by searching through their medicine cabinets. People in Wisconsin use and discard large quantities of over-the-counter medications, prescriptions and personal care products every year. Flushing these products down the drain or throwing them in the trash may contaminate our lakes and rivers and affect fish and wildlife. There is also growing evidence that these products may be affecting the environment in unintended ways.
In response to a number of requests from concerned Northern Door citizens, representatives of the Door County Sheriff’s Department have graciously agreed to be on site to accept and safely dispose of unused or outdated prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as unused or outdated pills and capsules. Those items can still be in the original bottles or packaging they came in, or another option would be to put them in Ziploc bags. All the drugs will be secured and safely disposed of by officials from the Door County Sheriff’s Department, but please note that due to logistical issues they will not be able to accept liquids, creams, syringes, lotions, Chemo Therapy drugs, aerosols and inhalers, needles and mercury thermometers. Properly disposing of materials that contain personal information is one of the best ways to guard against identity theft.
Documents to be shredded may include old bank statements and other papers listing bank account information, credit card statements and documents listing credit card numbers, credit applications, pre-approved credit offers, old pay stubs, old utility bills, old tax records, and any and all other outdated records which contain Social Security, Employer I.D. or Driver’s License numbers.
Small household appliances as well as large appliances like refrigerators, stoves, freezers, and washers and dryers can all be easily recycled. Other appliances that can be recycled include microwaves, garbage disposals, dishwashers, and air conditioners. Much like appliances, in most cases electronics and computer components can also be recycled. Computer monitors contain harmful elements like mercury, lead, cadmium, and other substances that can be extremely harmful if they are disposed of improperly. Stereos, old copiers, fax machines and even broken or no longer used cell phones are also recyclable. It’s always best to try to recycle electronics so that they do not sit in a landfill or cause any other environmental problems.
If you have any questions regarding the medication drop-off service, please contact Lieutenant Bob Lauder – 920-746-2400. Questions regarding the Shredding/Appliance Recycling Day should be directed to the employees in the Village Administration Office - 920-854-4118 or the employees at the Town Hall – 920-854-2934.
Please note that anyone who brings items to be shredded, recycled or disposed of will be expected to abide by any and all CDC and Door County Public Health Dept. guidelines with respect to COVID-19. Thank you for your cooperation.
