California-based singer/songwriter Claudia Russell brings her unique Americana sound to Gibraltar Town Hall in Fish Creek on July 20 at 7:30 pm. Accompanied by her husband, Bruce Kaplan, on mandolin and guitar, Russell will also be joined by two of Door County’s favorite musicians – Katie Dahl and Rich Higdon. The quartet also will perform as Paper Birds on Tuesday, July 23, 7:30 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center on Washington Island.
Russell and Kaplan play a unique blend of folk woven from blues, country, pop, western swing and bluegrass to create an eclectic and engaging sound. Russell is known for her powerful and expressive voice that’s as at home on a whispery ballad as a full-tilt Buddy Holly-styled romp. Her tightly crafted songs deal with the classic themes of songwriting: love, longing and loss, as well as nostalgic reflections on youth and aging, as well as humorous treatments of the everyday trials of life.
Lovers Tree, their most recent CD, reached #5 on the National Folk DJ charts. Their distinctive music and easy-going manner have also won them spots at top venues across the US, including Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage, San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall and the legendary Club Passim in Boston MA. Claudia is also known to Door County audiences as a former cast member of Northern Sky Theater where she performed in shows such as Fish and Whistle, Goodnight Irene and Old Friends. It was there where Claudia formed an enduring friendship with Katie Dahl, one of the Midwest’s best songwriting talents.
It’s no wonder Russell is at home in front of the microphone – she’s a third-generation singer. Her father, Val Rosing, sang with the San Francisco Opera Company and was best remembered as the original vocalist on many BBC Orchestra 1930s million selling hits such as “Teddy Bears Picnic” and “Try a Little Tenderness.” Her grandfather, Vladimir Rosing was a Russian opera singer who performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and taught opera to U.S. soldiers during WW II. Russell cut her teeth as a backup singer in California and has sung backup with Tish Hinojosa, Willie Nelson, Kenny Loggins, Dave Alvin, Darryl Purpose and BMG recording artist Maggie’s Farm.
