Belgian Heritage Center Announces June ProgramsExploring Belgian History and Heritage

May 18, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Belgian Heritage Center

Brussels, Wis. (May 18, 2026) — The Belgian Heritage Center invites the community to attend two special June programs highlighting Belgian heritage, local history, and personal stories connected to world events.

The first program, WWII Belgian Resistance in Antwerp, will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Presenter Ivo Abraham will share the remarkable story of his family’s work in the Belgian resistance during World War II and reflect on the life of his grandfather, Fernand Abraham, who worked in Antwerp’s petroleum industry during a pivotal time in European history.

Ivo’s family traces its roots to both sides of Belgium’s language border, offering a unique bilingual and cultural perspective. Through personal memories and family stories, attendees will gain insight into the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of Belgian families during the war years.

Later in the month, the Belgian Heritage Center will participate in Door County History Days with a special presentation on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

As part of the countywide history celebration, presenters will explore the history of the Belgian settlement area between 1776 and 1900 and examine how local history was closely connected to major state and national events. Topics will include early settlement growth, the impact of war and the Great Fire, and the continued rebuilding and expansion of the Belgian communities that helped shape the region known today.

The Belgian Heritage Center campus will open at 11:00 a.m. on June 18. Docents will be available before and after the presentation to provide tours and share information about the campus and exhibits.

Both events are open to the public and will be held at the Belgian Heritage Center, located at 1255 County DK in Brussels.
