Birch Creek Music Performance Center will celebrate the opening night of its 43rd season on Thursday, June 21st, with “Positively Percussion I: A Faculty Showcase.” The event will begin Birch Creek’s four-session concert season, starting with seven concerts of Percussion & Steel Band over the course of two weeks. Percussion & Steel Band concerts at Birch Creek feature a wide array of musical styles, including Caribbean steel pan, standard percussion ensembles, classic jazz, world percussion, rearrangements of popular contemporary pieces, and new music.
Dan Moore, Professor of Percussion at University of Iowa, will return for his 20th season, and his third year as the program director for the Percussion & Steel Band session. “Positively Percussion is a unique opportunity to hear Birch Creek’s world class percussion faculty perform the music that is most meaningful to them,” Dr. Moore commented. “It gives them the chance to highlight their individual areas of expertise in an eclectic program of music.”
On Friday, June 22, the evening concert—“Percussion in Paradise: Musical Waves from Tropical Shores”—will include water-themed music in recognition of the Celebrate Water Door County initiative. On Saturday afternoon, June 23rd, a matinee concert, “Percussion Pops: Music Familiar and Fun,” will take place at 3:00 PM. This popular, family-friendly concert can be enjoyed by all ages. Children and student tickets (normally $6 and $10) are free for this Saturday matinee performance.
Percussion & Steel Band concerts, including opening night, start at 7:30 PM in the Dutton Concert Barn, with 7:00 PM student prelude music in the gazebo. No evening performance on the Saturday of the matinee concert (June 23rd).
