Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (October 11, 2022) – “Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees, And the flowers and the trees, And the moon up above….” That old song does a pretty good job of summing up the programs at Crossroads at Big Creek this week.
We have been documenting bird migration at our Cove Estuary Preserve throughout the month, and on Thursday evening October 13, we are honored to host Dr. Ray Faber who can tell ya ‘bout “A Century with Herring Gulls.” His presentation will be given in the lecture hall of the Collins Learning Center at 7:00 p.m. It will begin with a brief introduction by Kathleen Harris, of the Ephraim Historical Foundation, on the ground-breaking work done by Harold Wilson on Strawberry Island near Ephraim. This event is offered in conjunction with the Ephraim Historical Foundation and is free and open to the public. Dr. Faber is presenting the same program earlier in the day, from 1 – 2:00 p.m. at the Ephraim Town Hall.
Members of the Door County Beekeepers Club will tell ya ‘bout the bees at their October meeting on Tuesday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. Most people think of honey when they think of honeybees, but these domestic insects have another valuable product. The beekeepers will tell ya ‘bout that in the program, “Mind Your Own Bees’ Wax.” The community is encouraged to attend.
And speaking of bees, honeybees and our many valuable native bees are frantically gathering both nectar and protein-rich pollen before the end of the growing season. And we need to tell ya that one of the objectives of the Pollinator Garden in front of the Collins Learning Center is to provide pollinators with native plants that will bloom from early spring and through summer and fall until after frost. The fall-blooming flowers are magnificent and colorful.
Trees are colorful too, and so are our family programs this week. Junior Nature Club on Wednesday, October 19 (and our Science Saturday program on Saturday, October 22), we will be telling young people and their companions about the leaves of deciduous trees.Curiously, for most of the coming week, the moon will be up above during the morning and set during the early afternoon, and we’ll be happy to tell ya about the moon also. So will the members of the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society.
Visit Crossroads this week to see the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees and the moon up above, and enjoy getting in touch with nature.
