Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (March 19, 2024) – Each Fall, Winter and Spring, the Door County Maritime Museum hosts experts and interesting characters from around the country for the Door County Maritime Speaker Series, presented in partnership with series sponsor Door County Medical Center.
The Maritime Speaker Series offers an assortment of monthly programs – from historical topics to current issues affecting the Great Lakes and the economy that relies on them.
The next presentation of the 2023-2024 Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series will be held both in person and online on Thursday, April 4 at 7pm, featuring Bridging the Gap: The History of the Sturgeon Bay Railroad Bridge, presented by Daniel Liedtke from the National Railroad Museum.
These days the initials A&W makes us think of root beer and burgers. Back in the 1800s residents of Sturgeon Bay had a much different association with A&W- trains! For close to a century, the Ahnapee and Western railway ran through what is now part of downtown Sturgeon Bay. Join us as Daniel Liedtke, Curator of the National Railroad Museum, discusses the history of trains in Sturgeon Bay, and their absence in the county today.
In 2002, Daniel Liedtke began work at Heritage Hill State Historic Park in Green Bay, as a Historic Guide where he held the positions of Interpretive Team Leader, Curator of History, and Education Supervisor. In 2008, Mr. Liedtke accepted the position of Curator of Collections at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay. In 2010, he took over as Operations Manager while maintaining oversight of the museum’s collection.
The Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series programs are the first Thursday of each month, October through May, beginning at 7 pm, on the second floor of the Museum, and online. No cost to attend; suggested donation of a non-perishable food item, or if watching online, we ask you to make a food donation to your local food pantry.
