Sister Bay, Wis. (August 17, 2023) – The Sister Bay Lions Club has announced that Marina Fest’s Bill Steger Memorial Boat Building tent will be open on September 2nd to provide school-age children from pre-school to 12 years old the chance to build their own wooden motorboat or sailboat. Over the years, more than 3,000 boats have been built to the delight of grandparents, parents and especially the children themselves.
To participate, bring your young “boat builders” to the Sister Bay Lions Club tent on Saturday, September 2nd. The event runs from 11am to 4pm with time slot sign-ups beginning at 9:30am. You can help the Lions Club continue making their annual donation of $750 to the International Lions Leadership Dog Program.
Bill Steger, a former marine engineer in the Navy and Sister Bay Lions Club president, originally created the event. Following his death in 2005, the Lions Club decided to continue and expand the project as a service to the community. Every year, Lions Club members spend approximately 200 hours cutting out and sanding the wood into boats, drilling the masts and beams, and sewing and wiring the sails.
This year the Lions would like to acknowledge donations for the project from Carlson-Erickson, Sister Bay Ace Hardware, Vans Builders, and Wisconsin Builders Supply.
The Sister Bay Lions Club was established in 1952 because its members share a common core belief, to serve and meet the needs of the Sister Bay community. Over the past 70-plus years, the Sister Bay Lions have contributed in excess of $1,200,000 to worthwhile community projects and activities.
Lions have had a dynamic history both internationally and locally. Founded in 1917, Lions International is best known for blindness-related activities, but the Club also volunteers for many other kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, raising awareness of eye disease, support for local children and school groups, natural disasters, humanitarian programs, and aiding seniors and the disabled.
