The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any. — Alice Walker
Last weekend, twelve women gathered in our Library Classroom, all strangers to the others in the room. They came together for the first session of Telling The Truth of Our Lives, our year-long mentoring program for women who want to write but who have faced barriers to doing so. Though they entered the room cautiously with the uncertainty of what to expect from these unknown faces, they opened up to one another and shared their stories and their hopes for writing. Three hours later, they left the room laughing, making arrangements to meet up, and with excitement for the next monthly session. That morning reinforces the power sharing our stories has and the connections such sharing creates.
Which Women Writers Inspired You?
In honor of Women’s History Month, we are changing up our monthly Readers’ Cafe. This program started as an unstructured quiet time for people to sit and read. This month, we will instead have an informal and friendly discussion of the women writers who inspired us. Bring a book you love by a female poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, memoirist, children’s writer and share with others why you admire the book and the woman who wrote it.
Nature and Nurture
We are so excited for the presenters at our 2025 Writing On The Door Conference: Writing the World. This two day conference will focus on writing about nature and the environment. What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend than by honoring Mother Earth? This conference has something for everyone who is passionate about taking care of our planet, whether or not they think of themselves as a writer. I hope you join us Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, for great conversations about the world we all love.
In addition to this conference, we have many ways to nurture writers of all ages coming up this spring and beyond. I look forward to seeing you at these programs. If not there, just drop by to say “Hi” as you head out to hike our trails!
