Door County, Wis. (September 21, 2026) – The Door County Master Gardeners have received a $2,474 grant for its Door County Seed Library program from the Door County Community Foundation through the Bargains Unlimited Charitable Fund. The grant will be used to purchase seeds and supplies for distribution during the 2027 growing season. The funds will help the Seed Library meet its 2027 goal to distribute over 12,000 packets of free seeds and educational handouts to gardeners of all ages. Penne Wilson, Door County Master Gardener President and Seed Library co-founder said, “We believe that strengthening knowledge of local food systems and cultivating the skills required for sustainable food production (for humans and pollinators!) helps to support our community’s health, environment, economy, and social connections.”
The Door County Seed Library is a community resource for gardening education that provides free seeds for members to ‘check out’ and plant in their home gardens. Seeds are distributed through select Door County Library branches, food pantries, several local nonprofit organizations and at special events. Since its launch in 2019, the Seed Library has distributed over 75,000 packets of seeds, helping to grow new gardens and gardeners across the peninsula. The primary goal is to get people’s hands in the dirt, digging and planting to strengthen food stability in the county with wholesome fresh produce while fostering a culture of sharing. The Seed Library helps our community to implement green, sustainable gardening practices while increasing the capacity of the community to grow healthy food.

The Door County Seed Library is a program of the Door County Master Gardeners Association. The Seed Library has over 1,600 members and is primarily supported by grants from the Door County Community Foundation, donations, and the dedicated efforts of dozens of volunteers.
