Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (April 5, 2021) – Learn how one of the world’s most widely used objects has been fought over during this month’s Door County Maritime Speaker Series, with Museum Curator Rhys Kuzdas on Thursday, April 8 at 7pm.
Join Rhys as he presents the history of the world’s first modern shipping container, built in Sturgeon Bay. He will tell the story of the container’s inventor, Leathem D. Smith, the process of its design and plans for implementation, and eventual legal battles over it’s patents and legacy. The Speaker Series presentation will be virtually broadcast in front of the first actual prototype, on display in Sturgeon Bay at the Door County Maritime Museum.
Rhys will lead viewers on a tour of the container’s construction, including examples of the rarely-seen original engineering drawings and photographs. We will record the presentation and share it on our YouTube channel and Facebook page afterwards. Thanks to Door County Medical Center for supporting the Maritime Speaker Series.
