Baileys Harbor, Wis. (March 31, 2020) – On March 31, 2020, the Door County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a fraud attempt involving the COVID19 pandemic.
The suspect impersonated a local government official, via email address, and a message was sent to a local business owner. The fraudulent sender requested the business owner contact the sender to inform them as to how to accept and process COVID-19 donations. The attempt was immediately recognized as a potential scam and the Sheriff’s Office was notified. It is suspected the sender was attempting to seek banking records, therefore allowing access to the business owner’s finances.
The Door County Sheriff’s Office is currently attempting to identify the perpetrator. Please stay vigilant in detecting and reporting these and all other types of scams. The Door County Sheriff’s Office reminds our community members to never give out your personal/banking information to someone you do not know or have verified are trustworthy.
