On the heels of a jam-packed summer and fall season, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) announces its vibrant 2020 winter season. The Door County Talks morning lecture series, coffeehouse concerts in DCA’s cozy lobby, and stellar shows on DCA’s state-of-the-art main stage will make for an eclectic calendar of events at DCA this winter.
Main Stage Shows On December 30, DCA presents a Door County holiday tradition: its seventh-annual Play It Forward for the Holidays concert, which brings together local talent to benefit a good cause (this year, the GO BO Foundation). Next, on January 28, innovative dance troupe Pilobolus presents “Shadowland: The New Adventure,” which uses mixed media to tell a love story about two people and their quest to save a magical bird. Employing animation, video and live shadow theater, this madcap adventure dips its toe into the genres of science fiction, film noir and romantic comedy. And on February 14, Davina and The Vagabonds will team up with Hot Club of Cowtown to present “The Finest Hour: Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Music that Ended WWII.” “The Finest Hour” celebrates American music at the end of World War II, when European jazz, Western swing, blues, and pop energized dance halls and radio waves throughout the country.
Fireside Coffeehouse Concert Series On January 18, DCA will launch its 2020 Fireside Coffeehouse Concert Series. This year, the series will offer cutting-edge Americana from Genevieve Heyward & The North (1/18); a concert and uke jam/singalong from Forté and The Pianissimos (2/8), tight folk harmonies from identical twins The Brother Brothers (2/22), and a Leap Day edition of the poetry/music coffeehouse Words on Fire, a collaboration with Write On, Door County (2/29). This year’s Words on Fire will be produced by Door County Poet Laureate Nancy Rafal, who was one of the event’s co-founders.
All coffeehouse concerts take place at 7:00 p.m. in the DCA Fireside lobby. Tickets are $17.50 each ($22 for The Brother Brothers). Advance reservations are strongly suggested. Coffee and bakery from Kick Ash Coffee will be available for purchase.
Door County Talks Series Once again, DCA (with collaborations from The Door County Civility Project, Just Door County, and The League of Women Voters) will present its Door County Talks Saturday morning lecture series. Individual lectures will focus on immigration politics (1/18), the long and ongoing civil rights movement (2/8), women’s suffrage and gender equality (2/22), and the American abolitionist movement (2/29).
All Door County Talks begin at 10:00 a.m. Lectures are free to the public; freewill donations are encouraged. Coffee and bakery from Kick Ash Coffee will be available for purchase. Each talk will include a short break, a post-talk question-and-answer session with the speaker, and a chance to meet and reconnect with the year-round Door County friends and neighbors.
Community Partners Events Rounding out the season will be several Community Partner events. These events include Boogie & The Yo-Yoz: Christmas with You (12/14) and numerous performances by Gibraltar School students.
The DCA winter season is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning.
Special thanks to Passport Program partners, Friends of Gibraltar, and Gibraltar Schools.
