Hoping to spread comfort and cheer during this time of state- and worldwide lockdowns, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) has announced three weeks of “Spring Training” programming on DCA’s Facebook page. Each weekday through Friday, April 3, DCA is offering five different programs: a 6 a.m. morning meditation, an 8 a.m. virtual visual art exhibit, a 10 a.m. storytime, a 2 p.m. music matinee, and a 4 p.m. do-it-yourself dance party. Some of Door County’s most beloved musicians, artists, and clergypeople have signed on to participate in the effort.
DCA Executive Director Cari Lewis explains, “Once we addressed immediate safety protocols for our building and staff, and once Gibraltar Schools canceled spring school performances, we at DCA turned our attention to how we could continue delivering on our mission at this time. The idea for Spring Training quickly began taking shape, and partners showed up willing and ready to help and participate.
“Spring Training is inspired in part by Angeles Arrien’s four universal healing salves: silence, storytelling, dance, and singing. We aim to use these four salves to continue delivering on our mission during uncertain times, encourage growth in positive directions, feature and support our local creative economy, and care for our community’s cultural needs in sickness and in health.”
Last week’s live-streams (which can all still be viewed on the DCA Facebook page) included a reading by Wisconsin author Michael Perry, concerts by Katie Dahl, Wade Fernandez, and Gibraltar High’s own Solomon Lindenberg, and an original spoof on reality TV written and performed by Alan Kopischke, Anya Kopischke, and a cast of Barbies.
Upcoming Spring Training Programming will include concerts by Eric Lewis, Cathy Grier, Jeanne Kuhns, Mike and Joshua Ammons, Dan Luedcke, Mark Raddatz, and Ben Larsen. Pastor Michael Brecke will offer meditations, and story times (presented by Write On, Door County) will feature C.J. Hribal, Jami Hanreddy, Ann Heyse, Rebecca Meacham, Al and Eden DeGenova, Alessandra Simmons, Mary Ellen Sisulak and Jerod Santek.
Lewis continued, “We are so grateful for the support of all of these presenters and the participants/virtual audience members. Jerod Santek and his staff at Write On, Door County have been amazing co-hosts. We’re considering launching a second session.”
