Fish Creek, Wis. (February 21, 2023) – On Saturday, February 25, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will offer two free events: a 10 a.m. “Door County Talks” panel on loneliness, connection, and community, and an Coffeehouse Concert by Cathy Grier and Paul Taylor.
Door County Talks: UWGB Panel – Loneliness, Connection, and Community
At 10 a.m., on David Helpap (political science/public administration), Ryan Martin (psychology), Kelli Strickland (arts administration), and Jennie Young (English) will join forces for this UWGB panel examining loneliness, connection, and community. The four panelists reflect different disciplinary perspectives and will discuss the issue of loneliness from a variety of angles: What are the political consequences of loneliness and what are some policy changes that can address those consequences? How can writing combat loneliness and isolation? What are the mental health consequences of our current loneliness crisis and what might individuals do about it? What are the impacts of social prescription programs, in which physicians prescribe participation in arts experiences combat depression, anxiety, and social isolation? This presentation is part of the University of Wisconsin-Green Common CAHSS series on Loneliness, Connection, and Community.
Door County Talks are free, but freewill donations are encouraged. Refreshments will be available from Ellison Bay’s Kick Ash Coffee.
Coffeehouse Concert: Cathy Grier and Paul Taylor
At 7 p.m., Paul Taylor and Cathy Grier will present a Coffeehouse Concert in DCA’s cozy Fireside Lobby, each performing a solo set. Both transplants to Door County from elsewhere (Memphis and New York City, respectively), Taylor and Grier have electrified Door County’s music scene with their work.
Blues traveler Grier’s gritty, soulful vocals underscore the poignancy of her lyrics. Blues music is the cornerstone of her dynamic stage presence, tasty guitar licks, and eclectic writing, and her life story can be heard in every heartfelt note.
Paul Taylor is a Grammy- and Emmy-nominated multi-instrumentalist from Memphis, TN, who relocated to Door County in 2020. Defying genre, Taylor blends elements of blues, jazz, country, Americana, folk, and rock and roll with his singular songwriting style, eclectic cover choices, and prodigious guitar playing skills.
Concert tickets cost $17.50. Advance reservations are recommended, as seating is limited.
