DCA Presents Davina and the Vagabonds, Hot Club of Cowtown Present Music of World War II in “The Finest Hour”

February 6, 2020 by Laurel Ciohon

On Friday, February 14, at 7 p.m., high-energy bands Davina and the Vagabonds and Hot Club of Cowtown will come together at Door Community Auditorium (DCA) to present “The Finest Hour,” a celebration of American music at the end of World War II, when European jazz, Western swing, blues, and pop energized dance halls and radio waves throughout the country.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the iconic music that accompanied the end of World War II, the legendary tunes of Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald and more will be brought to life at DCA by two remarkable bands, each with their own dynamic sound and style. Davina and the Vagabonds’ edgy vocals and superlative musicianship combine jazz and the blues for a uniquely ageless sound, while the Texas trio Hot Club of Cowtown ignites the stage with hot jazz and Western swing.

Since exploding onto the scene in 2005, Davina and the Vagabonds have grown from a down-and-dirty blues band into one of the most exciting acoustic ensembles on the international stage. DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrics, and tender gospel. Elmore Magazine says, “Davina is a modern day, female version of Louis Armstrong.”

Hot Club of Cowtown have traveled the world since 1998, playing their original fusion of Django Reinhardt-style gypsy-jazz and Bob Wills-style hoedowns and Western swing. Rochester City Paper raved of their live show, “Hot Club of Cowtown swung light and tight, like tumbleweeds made of velvet.”

“The Finest Hour” is made possible with support from Winter Series sponsors Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning and supporting sponsor The Cordon Family Foundation. DCA is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The Finest Hour” begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 14. Ticket prices range from $25 to $48. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
