Fish Creek, Wis. (September 26, 2023) – On Friday, October 6, at 7 p.m., Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a performance by the fiery dance troupe Hiplet Ballerinas.
Hiplet (pronounced HIP-LAY), formerly known as “The Rap Ballet,” is an Afro-centric fusion of hip-hop and ballet. Developed in the 1990s by Homer Hans Bryant, Hiplet has expanded beyond its Chicago roots into an internationally touring ballet troupe, informed both by classical pointe technique as well as hip-hop, jazz, African, and Latin dance traditions. Specifically designed to make ballet accessible to all by mixing classical dance with contemporary popular songs, Hiplet’s kinetic performances feature Tchaikovsky combined with African drums, arabesques backed by beat-boxing, and tango en pointe—showcasing Hiplet’s trademark sass, hip movements, and struts to the sounds of Black Violin, Beyoncé, Prince, and more.
Inlander wrote of the troupe’s performance, “Hiplet brings you to your feet . . . wanting to engage with the dancers, to be a part of the magic on stage.”
Hiplet’s performance is made possible with support from major sponsor The Blacksmith Inn, as well as supporting sponsors Sarah and Brian Bonovich, The White Gull Inn, and Wisconsin Cheese Masters. The performance is part of DCA’s Passport Series, which brings the world to Door County students and families via an assortment of cultural and educational experiences. Hiplet will perform a student matinee and workshop for Door County students in partnership with Friends of Gibraltar and supported by Passport Program Sponsors including Presenting Sponsor Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik, Major Sponsors Peninsula Pulse and Matt & Karla Sagorac, Supporting Sponsors Wisconsin Public Radio and The Landmark Resort, and Partners Grasse’s Grill, Wood Rabbit Acupuncture, Red Putter Mini-Golf and Willow and Chris Alexander.
