On Saturday, January 18, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will offer two events: a 10 a.m. “Door County Talks” presentation about immigration politics, and a 7 p.m. Fireside Coffeehouse Concert by up-and-coming Americana artist Genevieve Heyward, performing at DCA with her band The North.
Door County Talks: Immigration Politics with Dr. Alise Coen
UW-Green Bay professor Alise Coen will deliver this week’s Door County Talks presentation, entitled “Immigration Politics: Between Rights and Restrictions,” at 10 a.m. in DCA’s cozy Fireside Lobby. This lecture will explore the complex history of U.S. immigration politics, which has long been characterized by tensions between migration restrictions and migrant rights. Nativism, human rights advocacy, international law, and evolving court interpretations have all played crucial roles in immigration policy. Dr. Coen’s presentation aims to weave together these diverse and sometimes paradoxical historical forces to help shed light on current political realities.
Alise Coen is Associate Professor of Political Science at UW-Green Bay. Her presentation will include a post-talk question-and-answer session. Coffee and bakery from Kick Ash Coffee will be available for purchase. Dr. Coen’s lecture is presented in conjunction with The Door County Civility Project and is free to the public. Freewill donations are encouraged.
Fireside Coffeehouse Concert: Genevieve Heyward & The North
At 7 p.m. in DCA’s Fireside Lobby, ascendant Americana artist Genevieve Heyward will perform at DCA with her band The North. Fresh off of a Scandinavian tour, Heyward will be making her DCA debut and performing selections from her sophomore EP, “The River.” With vocal stylings that have drawn comparisons to Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, Heyward is light on nostalgia but heavy on heart. Her band, The North, features Wisconsin-based Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and producer Marcus Trana (Painted Recordings) and beloved Door County guitarist Nick Hoover (Deathfolk).
At the Lakemagazine writes, “[Heyward’s] voice, both sultry and smoky, has shades of Brandi Carlile, Stevie Nicks, and Amy Winehouse.”
Tickets for Heyward’s concert are $17.50. Seating is limited. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m, and can also be reached on the phone at (920) 868-2728 or online at dcauditorium.org.
