Door County, Wis. (May 31, 2023) – The initial grant awards from Destination Door County’s new Community Investment Fund (CIF) were announced recently. Eight projects will benefit from a total of $325,251, including the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse restoration project. Destination Door County President/CEO Julie Gilbert shared that the first grant cycle will have an positive impact by assisting three municipal governments, the County of Door, and four area non-profit organizations – including the Door County Historical Society!
“We are so grateful to have been awarded a CIF grant,” commented Amy Frank, DCHS Executive Director. “The grant money will be added to our capital campaign to restore Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.”
Built in 1868, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse was restored and opened as a public museum in 1960 by the Door County Historical Society. The Society has provided routine maintenance to the lighthouse, but time and weather have taken its toll. “Properly restoring and interpreting the lighthouse will allow future generations to experience and understand what life was like for lightkeepers in the late 1800s to early 1900s.”
DCHS also plans to reconstruct lost buildings, such as the summer kitchen and barn, which will add space for additional programming. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse welcomes nearly 20,000 visitors each year and is one of the main attractions for tourists in Door County.
