The Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) is pleased to present our newest exhibit Built for Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in World War II online. The Museum is working to make our educational resources and archives available online as quickly as possible.
Beginning Wednesday, April 8th and continuing each school day through April 22nd (no post on Good Friday, April 10th), the Museum will share the ten interpretive panels that make up the exhibit, along with a ten-question quiz.
Visitors to www.dcmm.org/exhibits/built-for-battle-online/ can click on the image of each panel to read about the impact of the Door County shipbuilding industry on the successful outcome of the Second World War. They can then click the link below the panel to download the quiz.
The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two. As a center of shipbuilding during this time, Sturgeon Bay produced hundreds of vessels to supply the demands of the war effort.
Built For Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in World War II, which opened February 2020 at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, highlights warships constructed in Door County and the experiences of their crews during the tumultuous years of the 1940s. This exhibit brings to life the big stories of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy aboard small ships during great engagements upon the waves. The new exhibit also explores what happened to these vessels after they left their freshwater docks; most never returned to the Great Lakes.
As our community adjusts to a “new normal” during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Door County Maritime Museum wishes to continue to fulfill our mission to preserve and celebrate the rich maritime history of Door County and the Great Lakes. We want to continue to educate and engage our community, especially our area school-age population, currently dislocated from their routine, classrooms, teachers and peers.
The first online DCMM exhibit was Shipwrecks of Door County, featuring animated video stories of eight of the more than 270 shipwrecks that surround the Door Peninsula.
