Door County, Wis. (April 30, 2021) – Destination Door County (DDC) is excited to announce a new community initiative called Leave No Trace Tuesday, a monthly community mixer that will take place the second Tuesday of each month. DDC staff, along with interested community members, will tackle service projects throughout Door County.
The inaugural event kicks off Tuesday, May 11 from 5:30-7:30 pm at Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay where volunteers will work together to pick up trash and mulch beds. Volunteers are asked to meet at the park shelter to learn about and sign the Door County Pledge, grab a snack, and do some community service work while socializing with fellow community members. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided.
Morgan Rusnak, Membership Manager for DDC, explained how this new program evolved from long-standing organizational networking functions. “This is our covid-friendly, socially distant re-invention of the member mixers we’d done for years,” she said. “Not only can business and community members connect during our Leave No Trace Tuesday events, but at the end of the evening we will have cleaned up one of the green spaces that make Door County so special,” Rusnak stated.
These events are open to everyone and are not just for DDC members, a point Rusnak reiterated. “All are welcome to participate and attend, it’s not meant to be a members-only event by any means,” she said. “Attend with your colleagues, bring the kids to help if you’d like, really everyone is welcome.”
The Leave No Trace name comes from DDC’s partnership with Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and the Leave No Trace 7 Principles the organization announced last year. Rusnak said the tie-in and name was a natural fit for the organization, which has worked to incorporate more eco-focused initiatives into the mix.
DDC will rotate communities each month and welcomes suggestions for a favorite park, beach or trail to clean-up or work on. Reach out to Rusnak with suggestions at morgan@doorcounty.com. For more information on the program visit the Destination Door County member Facebook page at Facebook.com/DDCmembers. More information will also be shared in the organization’s regularly distributed partner newsletter.
Leave No Trace Tuesday is part of a larger DDC initiative called Care for Door County. Care for Door County focuses on cultural, quality-of-life, and eco-focused initiatives to protect and care for the county we all love. More details about Care for Door County will be released during National Travel & Tourism week, scheduled for May 2-8, 2021.
