Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (September 28, 2026) – Every gravestone marks a life—but how do you uncover the story behind the name?
The Door County Historical Society invites the public to its next Dine & Discover program on Monday, October 26 at 6 p.m. at Door County Fire Company in Sturgeon Bay. The evening features Dennis Jacobs presenting Grave Digging: Researching a Life Story, an intriguing look at the detective work involved in bringing people from the past to life through research.
Have you ever attended a cemetery walk and wondered how a name on a gravestone becomes a compelling character? Jacobs will take guests behind the scenes of that process, beginning with basic genealogy research—names, dates, family connections and public records—and then digging deeper into historic newspapers to uncover personal accomplishments, community connections and perhaps even a scandal or two.
Each step brings researchers closer to discovering the experiences and hidden truths that make up a person’s life story. Guests will leave with practical knowledge they can use to begin researching stories of their own.
The program begins at 6 p.m. Monday, October 26, at Door County Fire Company. Cost is $40 per person or $35 for Door County Historical Society members and includes dinner and the presentation.
Advance registration is required. Guests are encouraged to register early through the Door County Historical Society.
