Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) has reduced dog adoption fees in response to rising dog population.
Green Bay and Door County, Wis. (February 11, 2026) – The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) has reduced dog adoption fees in response to rising dog population at all its sheltering locations. Adoption fees for all Benchwarmers have been changed to a name your own adoption fee.
“Benchwarmer” is the label WHS lovingly gives dogs who have been available for adoption longer than average. This designation comes along with an increase in promotion, reduced fees, and qualification for their Benchwarmer Tryout Program.
Through the Benchwarmer Tryout Program, a potential adopter can “try out” any one of WHS’s benchwarmers for up to seven days to see if they are a good fit for your home. After the week is over, you will be able to complete the adoption online and from the comfort of your own home. If, however, you decide your benchwarmer is not a great fit, no worries! Simply bring the animal back to WHS where they will rejoin the other animals available for adoption, having benefitted from time outside the shelter environment.

Can’t adopt but still want to help? You can help open shelter space AND make a direct difference in the life of an animal by bringing one home to foster! WHS provides necessary medications, supplies, food, instructions, and support; you provide the love until they are ready for a home of their own. If you’re not already an approved foster parent, getting started is easy – apply today at https://www.wihumane.org/foster/apply.
If neither of these options are right for you, the Wisconsin Humane Society is also running their Valentine’s Day Match. Right now, through the end of Valentine’s Day, your donation to WHS will be doubled up to $20,000! To donate, head to wihumane.org and click on Double my Gift.
