Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (September 5, 2023) – It’s a party – and everyone is invited! The Climate Change Coalition of Door County is marking 10 years of climate education and action with a celebration Wednesday, Sept. 20, at About Thyme Farm, 8425 County Highway F, Baileys Harbor. The festivities begin at 4:30 and will conclude by 8:30.
Jo Handelsman, Ph.D., director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a former science advisor to President Barack Obama, will speak on “The Earth Beneath Our Feet: Climate Change and the Soil Loss Crisis.”
Since 2013, the Climate Change Coalition has provided a broad range of education programs and hands-on opportunities to address climate change in our own lives and communities. Celebrate with us in an evening of conversation, dinner, music by the acclaimed Colin Welford, and a compelling presentation and Q&A following.
Handelsman is a nationally known expert in microbiology and soil health and a former associate director for science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Widely published, she is known for groundbreaking research into microbial communication and metagenomics. She is the author of A World without Soil: The Past, Present, and Precarious Future of the Earth Beneath Our Feet, hailed as “a celebrated biologist’s manifesto addressing a soil loss crisis accelerated by poor conservation practices and climate change.” At the University of Wisconsin she is a Vilas Research Professor and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor.
Share the excitement with us! Thyme Catering will provide dinner. Cost is $40 per person; make reservations at climatechangedoorcounty.com . Wine, beer, and Dave LaLuzerne’s famous hibiscus tea will be free, though donations will be welcome.
