Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (March 23, 2023) – Door County Community Foundation recently awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin from their Children and Youth Fund for the Door County Youth Mentoring Program.
Mental health problems in children and adolescents are a lasting legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic, making the one-on-one mentoring of Big Brothers Big Sisters more important than ever. The grant to this program helps strengthen existing matches in Door County between “bigs” and “littles” and foster new relationships.
The Community Foundation also recently awarded Door County Maritime Museum a Sustainability Grant from the Health and Human Needs Fund to purchase sensory backpacks.
While most Door County Maritime Museum guests might enjoy the sounds, smells, textures, and brightness between exhibit spaces, these sensory stimuli could prove to be overwhelming to autistic or other neurodiverse visitors. This grant will fund the purchase of sensory backpacks. Loaning sensory backpacks to autistic and neurodiverse museum patrons will remove barriers to experiencing the museum by empowering individuals to better understand and navigate a sensory-heavy environment.
