Door County Dog Store: Retail Shop, Grooming, and Homemade Treats
By Laurel Ciohon
As a dog lover and owner, I was very excited to stop by the Door County Dog Store in downtown Sturgeon Bay. Previously Perry’s Cherry Diner, Door County Dog Store is well into their 12th season as one of Door County’s favorite pet supply stores. Offering home-baked treats, apparel, and even a self-service dog wash, Door County Dog Store is here to stay.
Door County Dog Store’s sign cleverly asks dogs to “bring in their owners to browse” the fabulous pet store. Their home-baked treats are made on premise by Stove Dog Bakery and look yummy enough for humans to eat! When I stopped in the store in early December, the treats were holiday themed, with candy cane, snowman, Christmas tree and Santa-shaped cookies. They also offer several other treats of all flavors and types, cakes, fresh frozen yogurt, and specific kinds of bagged food, including Fromm’s, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, and Nutro.
Door County Dog Store carries more than just food! There is a fabulous selection of toys for land or water, clothing, sports apparel, unique breed specifics, health and beauty needs, feeders, harnesses, collars, carriers, great gifts, and much more for both cats and dogs alike. While I was in the shop, a customer brought in her brand-new Shih tzu puppy, Shirley. Shirley needed a winter sweater, so the Dog Store employee on duty helped pick out the perfect color and size for the tiny puppy while it scampered around the store and nibbled on homemade treats.
Door County Dog Store also offers self-service and full-service dog grooming available by appointment and is convenient and reasonably priced. For the self-service option, the store provides the large tub, quality shampoo, towels, and a treat for you dog when it’s all. Prices are per pound ($10 0-59lbs, $12 60-84lbs, $14 85lbs and up). If you prefer full-service grooming, just call and make an appointment with their professional dog groomer.
Before Door County Dog Store opened over 10 years ago, owners Dan and Mike started Stove Dog Bakery in 1998, baking their all-natural treats and selling them at farmers markets across Wisconsin. They have since moved to their retail location in downtown Sturgeon Bay where the owners have created a one-of-a-kind specialized shop unlike any other in Door County.
I can’t wait to bring my dog back to this store to shop and possibly use their self-service dog wash station (although I prefer to leave that to the professionals!). What are great store to find unique gifts for you pet. Stop by to get your fur-baby a great Christmas gift this year to show them how much you love them!
