Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (February 24, 2025) — The Door County Historical Society (DCHS) invites the community to its March Dine & Discover Program on Saturday, March 22, at Samuelson’s Creek Pub and Grill in Sturgeon Bay. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon, followed by an engaging program on architect William Bernhard, presented by Jeff O’Keeffe of the Ephraim Historical Foundation.
In the early 1990s, the Ephraim Historical Foundation received a significant collection of architectural plans, designs, and drawings by William Bernhard, a Russian-born, German-trained architect who was active in the Chicago area and Door County from the 1920s through the 1940s. Bernhard played a key role in shaping the architectural landscape of Ephraim and beyond, designing notable structures such as his personal residence “Svea” (1920), the Ephraim Village Hall (1926), and the Door County Historical Museum (1937).
This presentation will explore Bernhard’s life and legacy, highlighting his impact on Door County’s built environment through over 200 examples of his work preserved in the EHF Archives.
Attendees will enjoy a lunch of soup, salad, and sandwiches while learning about Bernhard’s contributions to local history. The cost is $40 per person, with a discounted rate of $35 for DCHS members. Reservations are required by March 14 and can be made online, by phone, or in person.
Join us for an afternoon of history, architecture, and community as we uncover the fascinating story of William Bernhard’s Door County legacy.
