Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (May 31, 2023) – The Door County Historical Society is thrilled to bring back Saturdays at the Village, exciting program designed to engage families and individuals of all ages in an immersive educational experience about the captivating history of Door County. This weekly series aims to bring history to life through interactive activities, demonstrations, and engaging presentations, creating unforgettable memories for visitors.
Saturdays at the Village will take place at the Heritage Village at Big Creek, located in Sturgeon Bay. Each event will offer a hands-on activity, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the region’s rich heritage. From crafts and historic games to informative presentations and guided tours, visitors will have the opportunity to explore and engage with Door County’s fascinating past in an engaging and family-friendly atmosphere.
The program’s focus on education and family-friendly activities makes it an ideal experience for residents and visitors alike. Families can embark on a journey together, discovering the stories of early settlers, experiencing traditional crafts, and immersing themselves in the vibrant cultural tapestry that shaped Door County. Children will have the chance to step into the shoes of the past and gain a deeper appreciation for their local history.

Saturdays at the Village will kick off on June 3, 2023, at 11:00am. Each Saturday will feature a unique theme, ensuring that every visit offers something new and exciting for attendees. The series will run from June 3, 2023 through October 28, 2023, providing ample opportunities for the community to participate and engage with Door County’s history. Each program will last approximately two hours and are free of charge.
The Saturdays at the Village programs for the month of June include:
FISHtory – June 3, 2023 at 11am
Come discover Door County’s history of commercial fishing. Charles Henriksen from Henriksen Fisheries will speak. Crafts will celebrate Wisconsin’s free fishing weekend, and tours of the Kohl fish house will be offered.
Agriculture – June 10, 2023 at 11am
Make your own cherry craft while learning about the peninsula’s rich agricultural history from Rebecca Wiepz of the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station.
Snail Mail – June 17, 2023 at 11am
Egg Harbor postmaster Tom Anschutz shares the history of the post office in Door County. Visitors will have the opportunity to design their own stamp after the presentation.
Indigenous Stories – June 24, 2023 at 11am
As part of Door County’s History Days, visiting tribal representatives and local Door County historians will explore the importance of Indigenous storytelling.
