Door County History Days: The Door Peninsula Celebrates Its Unique Heritage, June 19-25

June 9, 2023 by Laurel Ciohon

Door County, Wis. (June 9, 2023) — For the second consecutive year, dozens of cultural and historical institutions throughout Door County have come together to launch Door County History Days, a weeklong celebration of history and heritage on the Peninsula. From Monday, June 19th to Sunday, June 25th, 20-plus nonprofit organizations will host more than 30 special programs in villages and destinations across the county. From Rock Island State Park in the far northern portion of the county to Brussels in the far south, history will be on display for all to experience and enjoy.

The official start of Door County History Days will be commemorated with a kickoff event at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay on Monday, June 19th, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The general public is invited, and participating organizations will staff info booths with historically-themed activities. Members of the media and other stakeholders are also invited for a Meet & Greet, the debut of a new History Days publication produced by the Peninsula Pulse, and remarks at 11:00 a.m. by:

• Elizabeth Meissner-Gigstead, Miller Art Museum Curator (event host)
• Brennan Christianson, Heritage Alliance of Door County Chair
• Julie Gilbert, Destination Door County CEO
• Christian Øverland, Wisconsin Historical Society Director & CEO
• Mike Gallagher, U.S. Congressman Representing the 8th District of Wisconsin
• André Jacques, Member of the Wisconsin State Senate from the 1st District
• Joel Kitchens, Member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from the 1st District

The organizer, the Heritage Alliance of Door County, is a collaborative group made up of museums, historical societies, and educational institutions in Door County.
