Tickets are now on sale for the Door County Maritime Museum’s annual Wooden Boat Raffle. The Grand Prize of the raffle is the hand-built 16’ St. Lawrence River Skiff, produced by the Museum’s Wooden Boatbuilding instructors and class participants. The beautiful wooden boat comes with hand-turned oars, as well as a trailer generously provided by SkipperBud’s Quarterdeck Marina.
First Prize in the raffle is a gift package of clothing and jewelry from O’Meara’s Irish House in Fish Creek, valued at over $850. Second Prize is a golf package for four people, a $250 value, from Peninsula State Park Golf Course.
Tickets for the annual DCMM Wooden Boat Raffle are $20 each or three for $50. Only 1,500 tickets will be sold for this event. Tickets are available for purchase at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay. All raffle proceeds benefit the mission of the Museum to celebrate and preserve Door County’s maritime history.
The St. Lawrence River Skiff is currently on display in the Peterson Gallery at the Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay. The boat will also be on display and tickets available for sale at various festivals and events throughout the 2019 summer season, including Baileys Harbor July 4th celebration, Nicolet Bank Tall Ships® in Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay Sidewalk Sales and more. The winning tickets will be drawn on Saturday, October 19th at 2pm, at the conclusion of the Sister Bay Fall Festival parade. (Winners need not be present at drawing.)
The St. Lawrence River Skiff took approximately 2,000 hours to complete. The 16’2″ hull is made of Meranti Mahogany Plywood. The rest of the boat is made from a variety of woods, including Laminated Mahogany, White Ash, Spanish Cedar, White Oak, Cherry and Local Red Cedar. The boat weights about 100lbs and has a capacity of 550lbs.
The exhibit “Jim’s Boat Building Shop, Est. 1997” is not only part of the Museum’s John Roen Asher Gallery, but an actual working wooden boat shop. Throughout the winter, our volunteer class leaders – Jerry McNamara, David Morgan and Bob Schottmuller – lead their students through the process of building a wooden boat by hand. A different style of boat is chosen by the instructors each year. This is the 23rd hull that the wooden boatbuilding class has produced and donated to benefit the Museum.
The class is open to beginners as well as experienced woodworkers and includes roughly 25 days of instruction between October and May. Aspiring boat builders have an opportunity to gain firsthand skills in the age-old craft of building wooden boats. Registration for the next boatbuilding workshop will open in September 2019.
