Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (March 3, 2025) – The Door County Master Gardener Association in collaboration with Wild Ones- Door Peninsula, have scheduled several educational events in March, suggesting that anyone can create a garden that will be a pollinator magnet. Native plants are beautiful, low-maintenance, adaptable and great sources of nutrition and habitat for butterflies, bees, moths, hummingbirds and more!
On Monday March 10, at 1:30 Master Gardeners will screen a pre-recorded webinar called “Designing Native Plant Gardens for Pollinators” presented by Tim Ripp, Horticulture Outreach Specialist, UW-Madison Division of Extension Sauk County and Lisa Johnson, Horticulture Outreach Specialist, UW-Madison Division of Extension Dane County. In this pre-recorded webinar, Ripp and Johnson will discuss design principles and suggest native plants that attract pollinators and can thrive in sunny or shady conditions.
The lecture “Life or Death of a Tree in 30 Minutes” will be presented by Tom Wolfe at 6:30 on Tuesday, March 11. Wolfe will describe the proper ways to plant conifer and deciduous trees and shrubs. His presentation will include woody plant physiology, botany and soil, focusing on native Door County trees and shrubs
For 34 years, Wolfe served as Head Gardener-Horticulturist for The Art Institute of Chicago. He designed and installed gardens at Notre Dame University and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall, maintained the garden at Shedd Aquarium, consulted on woody plants at Millennium Park Chicago, and here in Door County, designed the gardens at Green Gables.
“Soil and Your Garden” is the topic for the Wild Ones/Master Gardener Lecture on Tuesday, March 25 at 6:30. If you are are planning a pollinator garden, landscaping your property, or interested in growing your own food, but aren’t sure your soil is up to the task? No worries! Jamie Patton, soil scientist, will discuss ways to test and amend your soils to get the productive garden you’ve always wanted. From in-ground plantings to raised bed and container gardening, she’ll cover it all!. Jaime Patton is a certified professional soil scientist (CPSS)
Crossroads at Big Creek will host all three lectures at the Collins Learning Center, 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay. They are free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.
