“Door County Treasure Hunt” Coming September 1st

Love Door County? Check. Want to learn fun facts about the county? Check. Interested in a fun weekend in Door County? Check. Door County visitors can accomplish all these goals by participating in the Door County Treasure Hunt, scheduled for Saturday, September 30.

Treasure Hunt registration is still open for an event that will send out teams throughout the Peninsula, looking for clues and accumulating points for prizes. The Treasure Hunt is presented by Write On, Door County to raise funds for the non-profit organization’s programs, aimed at inspiring and enhancing writing and reading and bringing people together through stories.

“This is the beginning of a tradition,” says Write On, Door County’s Executive Director, Jerod Santek. “A lot of effort has gone into planning interactive and fun challenges. We believe people will come back year after year to compete in what will become a favorite Door County event.”

Teams will spend the day working through a booklet of clues that will take them to various places across the northern section of the county. (Next year’s Hunt will focus on the county’s southern half.)  The event is not timed, and teams can work at their own pace as they explore locations related to history, nature, food, art and other treasures of the county.

A light supper and music at Sawyer Farms in Egg Harbor will finish off the event as teams gather for the final tallying of points.  High scorers will win cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250.

Registration for the event is open at doorcountytreasurehunt.com, where additional event information is available.  Families, co-workers, and friends are encouraged to participate. A team can be made up of two to five people, all traveling in one car with one clue booklet. All ages are welcome.

The clues will be kept secret until starting time on the morning of the 30th. Some clues allow flexibility, such as Take a photo of a favorite place to watch the sun set. Other clues involve team challenges:  Build a sandcastle that incorporates your team’s name. Other clues require specific answers about nature or history or local landmarks.  Some clues involve word puzzles or “I Spy”-type searches. Each clue is assigned points based on difficulty.  Teams can pick and choose what clues they wish to follow.

“We want this to be fun and as challenging as participants want to make it,” said Anne Emerson, a founding board member of Write On, Door County. “This is a chance to spend a day with friends on an adventure. Explore, problem solve, meander your way to interesting spots throughout the county. Learn something new, pause to take in the county’s beauty, eat a little, laugh a lot, then finish the day at a party in a beautiful barn with food and music and prizes. What better way to spend a September day in Door County?”

Write On, Door County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of Write On, Door County is to facilitate and promote writing in Door County by nurturing the work of writers, supporting readers and audiences, and developing opportunities that encourage broad participation.
