Door County YMCA Offers Free Afterschool Meal Program for All School-Aged Children

November 12, 2025 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (November 12, 2025) — The Door County YMCA is proud to offer its Afterschool Foods Program, providing free, nutritious meals to all school-aged children in the community. The program runs Monday through Friday, providing a healthy meal after the school day — no YMCA membership required.

Even with the reopening of government and reinstatement of SNAP benefits, the Y recognizes the increased challenges that families face in putting healthy food on the table — especially at this time of the year. This program is part of the Y’s ongoing effort to ease some of that burden and ensure that no child goes hungry after school.

“Ensuring that every child has access to healthy food is part of our mission to strengthen our community,” said Tonya Felhofer, Chief Executive Officer of the Door County YMCA. “We invite all families to take part — no registration, no cost, just good food and community connection.”

Meals are served at both the Sturgeon Bay YMCA – Monday through Friday, 3:00-4:30 pm and at The Kane Center in Fish Creek – Monday through Thursday, 3:30-4:00 pm. Each meal meets USDA nutritional guidelines for children.

The Door County YMCA: For Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Driven by its founding mission, the Door County YMCA has 200 full and part-time staff serving over 12,980 members in Door County from facilities in Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay in a broad range of programming for all ages. The Y empowers everyone, no matter who they are or where they’re from, by ensuring access to resources, relationships and opportunities for all to learn, grow and thrive. By bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations, the Y’s goal is to improve overall health and well-being, ignite youth empowerment and demonstrate the importance of connections in and across 10,000 communities nationwide.
