Door County, Wis. (September 5, 2024) – In recognition of September being Fall Prevention Month, the Door County YMCA is committed to helping our community stay safe and active by hosting special Fall Prevention Workshops, which include free fall assessments. These workshops will occur on Wednesday, September 25 at 11:15 a.m. at the Jackie & Steve Kane Center in Fish Creek, and Thursday, September 26 at 11:30 a.m. at our Sturgeon Bay Program Center.
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and they can have devastating effects on independence and quality of life. Wisconsin is ranked #1 in fall-related deaths. Understanding the risks and taking proactive steps can make a significant difference in preventing falls.
Fall Prevention Workshops & Free Assessments
The Fall Prevention Workshops are designed to educate participants about the risks of falling and provide practical strategies to reduce these risks. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive a free fall assessment, which helps identify individual risk factors and offers personalized recommendations.
During the workshops, we will also highlight the benefits of our fall prevention programs, including:
- Stepping On – A comprehensive evidence-based workshop created by the Wisconsin Institute of Healthy Aging that empowers older adults to take control of their falls and build confidence in their mobility.
- Moving For Better Balance – An evidence-based fall prevention exercise program created by the Oregon Research Institute that focuses on improving strength, balance, and flexibility through the movements of Tai Chi.
- Tai Chi – A gentle form of martial arts that enhances balance and physical coordination through slow, deliberate movements.
- Chair Yoga – A modified yoga practice that offers the benefits of traditional yoga while being accessible for all fitness levels.
“Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. With the right knowledge and resources, many falls can be prevented,” said Abby Tesch, Specialty Wellness Director at Door County YMCA. “Our goal is to provide our community with the tools to stay active, independent, and confident in their daily lives.”
