Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (December 13, 2024) – The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society (DPAS) has scheduled additional holiday programs at the Leif Everson Observatory and the Stonecipher Astronomy Center so the people of the community can share the wonders of the night sky with their families and visitors. Or to just have a memorable experience.
Viewing Nights will be held outside and from inside the Observatory if skies are clear on Friday and Saturday, December 20 and 21. The Observatory houses a fabulous telescope which gives visitors the experience of viewing deep sky objects with DPAS member on hand to explain what they are seeing.
Solar Viewing will be offered, weather permitting, on Sunday, December 22 at 1:00. A telescope with a special filter will enable visitors to view the Sun, (which this year has been quite active) without damage to their eyes. While not guaranteed, the odds of seeing a solar flare or sunspots are pretty good.
And on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, the public is invited to attend a special holiday-themed planetarium shows, complete with music, humor and a bit of science. Space is limited but the show will be repeated every 30 minutes until everyone has seen had a chance to experience it.
And speaking of the holidays, if you are still looking for a unique gift or two, the DPAS 2025 calendars–featuring images of space captured by the observatory telescope will be available for purchase.
