Fish Creek, Wis. (May 12, 2025) –The Door County Historical Society is pleased to share significant progress in the ongoing restoration of Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, with notable advancements both inside the lighthouse and on its surrounding grounds.
Interior Restoration Progress
Inside the lighthouse, painting efforts are nearing completion. The second-floor hallway has been fully refreshed, and most other rooms are on track to be finished within the week. Only the large second-floor bedroom remains. Painters have worked diligently to repair plaster damage and restore the trim and wall surfaces with historically accurate colors that reflect the home’s original character. Their work enhances the historic ambiance and ensures each room reflects its late 19th-century origins.
Barn and Summer Kitchen Construction
Outside, the barn is rapidly taking shape. Despite a brief delay, framing began in earnest and all four walls were raised in a single day. The next steps include blocking, sheathing, and preparing for the second story. This framing work marks a major milestone in reconstructing the outbuildings that once supported the daily life of the Duclon family, who lived and worked at the lighthouse from 1883 to 1918.
The summer kitchen, another key outbuilding, has been fully sheathed, wrapped, and roofed. This marks a significant step forward in the restoration process, bringing the building closer to its historical appearance and function.
Electrical Infrastructure Enhancements
The project also welcomed Mike Maltby from Action Electric, who reviewed plans for trenching underground electrical conduit from the lighthouse to the summer kitchen and barn. This phase of the project will ensure that these reconstructed buildings can safely support modern programming needs without sacrificing historical integrity.
Community Support and Future Plans
All of these efforts are part of the Historical Society’s $2 million campaign to return Eagle Bluff Lighthouse to its full historic form. When complete, the lighthouse and its outbuildings will offer enhanced educational opportunities, immersive visitor experiences, and a vivid look at Door County life during the turn of the 20th century.
This vital work is made possible by community support. Every donation helps keep restoration moving forward and ensures this maritime landmark is preserved for future generations.
