On Sunday, August 11, at 8 p.m., eclectic nine-piece band Squirrel Nut Zippers will perform at Door Community Auditorium (DCA) in Fish Creek, joined by special guest Sierra Ferrell.
Quirky nine-piece band Squirrel Nut Zippers reunited last year in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their album “Hot,” which launched the hit songs “Hell” and “Put a Lid on It.” A vintage mashup of Delta blues, pop, and jazz, Squirrel Nut Zippers are often grouped in with swing revival bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, but the Zippers are far more unpredictable. Their many diverse offerings utilize rock instrumentation plus horns, piano, violin, banjo, saw, and more. As NPR put it: “It’s not easy to categorize the music of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, except that it’s hot.”
The A.V. Club calls Squirrel Nut Zippers “musically accomplished, respectful of history, refreshingly diverse, and, above all, a lot of fun.”
Special guest Sierra Ferrell, whom Gayrva calls a “flawless songwriter,” a “country barroom queen,” and “a swinging pop spitfire,” will open the show.
Squirrel Nut Zippers’ performance is made possible with support from presenting sponsor The Landmark Resort; major sponsor RocketDSD.com/IceCreamSouce.com;and supporting sponsors Alexander’s Restaurant, A Friend of the Auditorium, The Cordon Family Foundation, The Fireside Restaurant, and Peninsula Pulse.
