Beethoven, Haydn, and Schumann: Fairy Tales and Ghosts

July 6, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Sponsored by Joan & Stefan Anderson
Engage your imagination in the magic of music by three greats: Schumann, Haydn, and Beethoven. Schumann’s “Fairy Tales” is written for the same combination as Mozart’s “Kegelstatt Trio” (clarinet, viola, and piano) and is one of Schumann’s final compositions. He thought listeners would find it “highly romantic.” Beethoven’s “Ghost” gets its name from the haunted sound of the piano’s soft tremolando that underlies parts of the slow movement. Haydn’s Trio in C Major is not so scary, but its intensity and flair may leave you breathless. Written during his second visit to London, it is one of his last and best trios in a genre he pretty much invented. Three masterworks all.
